Firemen’s convention plans parade, battle of the barrel

The 130th annual Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Convention will take place this weekend in Arnold.

Events open to the public include a Battle of the Barrel at 9 a.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of Constitution Boulevard in front of Roosevelt Park.

Parade units will be judged from noon to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Valley High School, 703 Stevenson Blvd., New Kensington. The parade will step off at 6 p.m. Saturday and proceed down Drey Street to Fifth Avenue. Residents are asked not to park along the parade route, including either side of Drey Street and on the first blocks of Ridge Avenue, Alcoa Drive and Woodmont Avenue where units will line up.

Free advice available for those with financial troubles

Allegheny Valley Association of Churches has free support services available for anyone who is having trouble making ends meet, is unemployed or needs help with budgeting and talking to bill collectors.

School supplies wanted by A-R Education Foundation

Apollo-Ridge Education Foundation is sponsoring a school supply collection drive through Aug. 17.

Items needed include pencils, block erasers, lunch boxes, hand sanitizer, book bags, pencil top erasers, pens, Crayola crayons, 3-hole notebook paper, tissues and Post-It notes. Donations should be dropped off from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays through Aug. 17 at the high school entrance B – administration. For details, email Jamie Laws at [email protected].

Help needed at New Kensington cat shelter

Zen Cat Sanctuary is looking for volunteers to help out at the shelter in New Kensington.

Help is needed with cleaning, sanitizing, social media and marketing, grant writing, grooming and socializing the felines. For details visit zencatsanctuary.org.
